Apple Maps – Railroad Crossings
Overview
Lead UX design work related to railroad crossing data within Apple Maps infrastructure. Created wireframes, interface concepts, and UX deliverables to improve clarity, usability, and workflow efficiency. Regularly advocated for the end user in cross-functional meetings, ensuring that the end result would be aligned with the end user's needs.
Problem
Railroad crossings represent critical infrastructure that users must be aware of while navigating. The challenge was designing solutions that communicated this information clearly and at the right moment, without disrupting the overall navigation experience. This required balancing visibility, clarity, and usability within an already complex and highly refined interface.
Approach
I created wireframes, interface concepts, and UX deliverables to explore how railroad crossing data could be integrated into the navigation experience. I focused on ensuring the information was understandable, contextually relevant, and aligned with existing interaction patterns across iOS and CarPlay. A key part of my role involved advocating for the end user throughout the design process. I worked closely with engineers and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure design decisions prioritized clarity, usability, and real-world driving conditions. This included evaluating how users interact with navigation interfaces while driving and ensuring solutions supported safe and intuitive use.
Outcome
The resulting work contributed to improving how railroad crossing information is presented within Apple Maps, helping ensure users receive important infrastructure information in a clear and usable way. This project strengthened my ability to design for real-world environments, collaborate across teams, and create user-centered solutions within large-scale consumer products.
